Want to Be a Director? Become an Event Manager! — Key Traits of a Great Event Organizer

Working on many events has taught us (among other things) that a good event organizer should possess certain traits. Some are lucky enough to be born with them 🙂, while others need to work on acquiring them. However, it’s definitely not true that these traits are innate and only a few are born with them. Apart from a few basic rules to follow, the only limit to an event organizer’s actions is… their imagination. You can become a good organizer!

So, what traits should a really good event organizer have?

First and foremost — creativity. In this industry, having a million ideas per minute is a bargaining chip. No two events are the same. Therefore, you can’t approach event organization with a one-size-fits-all template. The goals, needs, and expectations of clients and event participants vary, and for each one, we should find the idea for THAT event. Individualized client approach and empathy are highly valued in this area.

Secondly — communication skills and ease of building relationships. An event organizer works in a team, is the main commander, but above all a collaborator. This role requires negotiation skills, handling contracts, and obtaining permits. Interaction with others is simply part of this profession. Therefore, an event organizer must be communicative and straightforward so that cooperation with the crew and clients is based on the simplest and most effective communication.

Thirdly — strong organizational skills. This is both a trait and a principle of a good event organizer. Preparing an event is a complex process involving planning, execution, and coordination — sometimes simultaneously. Having a plan and sticking to it helps avoid chaos and ensures attention to every detail. Organizational skills often go hand in hand with the ability to anticipate, which allows preparing contingency plans. Then, nothing should catch you off guard. However, if something does go wrong, a good event organizer should be ready for the “here and now” — to react quickly and efficiently, act effectively in a crisis, and find a backup solution.

A good organizer should also possess leadership skills. During event operations, the most important thing is effective cooperation of all people working on the event, and the organizer sets the direction and task distribution. Effective role assignment ensures everyone knows what to do and what they’re responsible for, preventing overlap, optimizing time and tasks.

Keep in mind that people organizing events act as director, scriptwriter, lighting technician, set designer, DJ, technical staff, logistics master… and the list goes on 🙂. This role requires multitasking. Therefore, it’s important that an event organizer has these traits and enjoys putting them to use. Beyond that, engagement in what you do and deriving joy and satisfaction from it also matter.

Thanks to working with professionals responsible for event organization, constant development, and training workshops, you can acquire the traits of a good event organizer and become one. Remember, though, that these people are incredibly energetic and have double the drive to act. You should have these two qualities if you want to cross the magic threshold into the event industry.

Good luck!
